IF TALANA Foot has a mantelpiece at home it must be filled to the brim with property awards. Since joining RE/MAX Independent Properties as a professional property consultant three years ago, she has been a star performer.

In the same year that she entered the property industry, Foot scooped four awards, including RE/MAX Rookie of the year for the Eastern Cape.

Plentiful awards have followed. Last year she achieved first place for the "Most homes sold in South Africa for RE/MAX".

Hard work is a given, but where does her drive come from? Her primary goal is achieving 100% customer satisfaction.

"Besides her work, I believe in honesty. I don't always tell people what they want to hear. I need to tell them what they need to hear.

"Clients see what a property is sold for in their area, but as property consultants we have tools that we use".

How long have you been in the property market?

Since April 2011.

What made you decide to become an estate agent and what did you do before?

I was an accountant for 16 years, but when I was shopping for a new home I just fell in love with the idea that I could actually make a career out of this.

What qualifications do you have?

NQF4, CDPE and PPRE.

What is the most frustrating part of being an estate agent?

To get financing in place from the banks in a short period of time to keep my clients happy.

What has been the most satisfying experience that you have had as an estate agent?

Every time I hand over the keys to the new owners. It is still the most satisfying feeling.

What advice would you give to first-time buyers with regard to affordability and what their best buy would be?

First we will have to see in which area and price range their affordability will allow them to buy and then assist them to buy the best house that offers the most for their price range.

What advice would you give to ensure they don't lose their property when the interest rates go up?

Buyers must never buy to their maximum amount allowed.

Move or Improve: what is the best option?

Always get a valuation before you improve on your home because if you over-capitalise on your property, you will struggle to get it back when you want to sell. Most areas have a ceiling price.

What is the most expensive house you have ever sold?

R3.4-million

And the cheapest?

R150 000

How would you compare the property industry in PE to the rest of the province?

I don't have experience in the rest of the province, but PE is still good value for money.

What is the average price for property in the city?

Between R750 000 and R1.2 million.

In which areas can one find bargains when looking for options to buy?

I think you can find a bargain in most areas.

Do you give advice on how to obtain a bond?

Yes, most of my clients get assistance from a bond originator.

Buying or renting: which is the better option at present?

Buying is always best. Starting out in the property market is better than paying for someone else's investment.

Do you feel the property market has turned the corner?

Yes, the property market is booming. I was fortunate enough to have "sold the most homes in South Africa" for Remax last year.

What do you do to relax?

I love to spend time with my two daughters and five dogs at home. My eldest is studying at NMMU and my youngest is at UCT.
